Benefitting from a wonderful micro-climate, the Balearic Islands enjoy a long hot summer, so the best time to sail in Majorca and Ibiza is May to mid-October. August is the peak month, with school holidays in play. June and July are both wonderful months to visit, with the sea temperature gradually rising as the weeks go by. Early July, and the very end of August and start of September are favourite times to sail outside of the school holidays. If you’re looking for a great deal, then May and October are the months for you!
Our bases in Spain are located on the islands of Majorca (Mallorca) and Ibiza. Unless on a two-week charter, you would sail the island that you depart from and not sail from one island to another. So, to sail Ibiza, you will depart from our base in San Antonio. To sail Majorca, we have bases in Palma and Cala d’Or.
Seamaster offers financially protected flight packages to Spain from the UK. Both Ibiza and Majorca have their own eponymous airport with a short transfer from the airport to the bases.
The weather in the Balearics is typically Mediterranean, with long hot and dry summers. During peak season of July and August temperatures average in the early 30s. In May and October, you'll experience temps in the early to mid-20s. The winds are mostly moderate and average Force 3-4 (light to moderate winds). In Majorca and Menorca, the wind comes predominantly from the north. In Mahon, the wind blows from the north 245 days a year. In Ibiza, Formentera and the other islands, the wind comes more from the south-east and wind speeds are generally lower.
The mooring fees in Spain can be robust, especially in the commercial marinas. You should also look to book ahead, which can be cheaper than paying when you arrive. Around Mallorca there are a considerable number of anchorages that are free to moor in overnight, s
To sail in Spain, you should have an ICC certificate (International Certificate of Competence). Please note that a Day Skipper certificate is no longer accepted on its own. If you have a sailing certificate that you would like to check, or if you are in any doubt, please contact Seamaster and we will advise you or even get pre-approval for you.
